Facial expressions drawing1/30/2024 If time permits, the tutors will encourage the students to experiment with facial expressions in free hand drawing or add accessories, like ears and hair. Check out the adorable faces my 6 and 9 year old children drew when I tried out this lesson with them!! The tutor will model each face, step by step, on a whiteboard or paper while the students follow along. We’ll have the students start with pre-drawn ovals as you see here. Of course, not all our tutors are confident drawing facial expressions so I made a tutor cheat sheet that points out the important elements of each expression. In our Classical Conversations community, we will be walking the students through how to draw certain facial expressions varying only the mouth, eyes, and eyebrows. Drawing from a live model who’s probably not holding very still or maintaining the same facial expression, in the 20 minutes we have available, seemed over the top difficult to me. It’s hard enough to draw a human face, and an unusual expression is even harder. I decided this project was going to be too difficult and discouraging for most of the students in my community. One suggestion for a Rembrandt project is to give the students mirrors, ask them to make a silly face and then draw that silly facial expression. This is how he taught himself how to paint specific emotions on the people in his paintings. He liked to look in a mirror, make funny faces at himself, and then draw them. Rembrandt was famous for all the people he drew and painted. So, in week 13 of cycle 2, we’ll be studying Rembrandt. This takes place in the third quarter of our fine arts program. This is a study exercise and not something that is planned on becoming a finished piece, so have fun with it and get the most out of it by drawing as many expressions as you can.In Classical Conversations we spend six weeks studying amazing artists and doing fun art projects to help us remember those artists. Remember at all times to keep things loose and quick. Keep working through drawing expressions on the remaining characters on your page, and then if you’re really feeling up to it, grab another sheet and draw another series of simple heads and try making up your own expressions. How much influence the cheek has on the face is determined by the nature of the pose you are trying to draw and how extreme the pose. One of the really important things to take note of while you’re watching these faces being created is when LaurieB! is talking about how the eyelids and eyebrows follow along with the ‘S’ curve on the head.Īnother important thing to notice is when she is explaining about the mass of the cheek and how it can affect the corners of the mouth as well as the eyes. Follow along with the video and start to work through your own examples.Īre you starting to see how fun and easy drawing expressions can be? Second Batch of Expression Drawings Learning how to warm up for sketching will come in useful for whatever you create!įrom the simple head created in the last step you can create all kinds of different expressions with just a few strokes of the pencil. Give yourself a little challenge at the start of this exercise and see how quickly you can draw the example heads while still having full control of your hand and pencil.Īfter the egg, add horizontal and vertical lines to find the middle points of the eggs, and finally draw in some circles for the eyes and another squashed circle for the nose. Keep life simple, and instead of trying to work perfectly, focus on working quickly. Start off by quickly drawing several egg shapes that will be used as the basis of the heads you’ll be drawing to go over these expressions.
